Manchester United will need to avoid defeat in Basel on matchday six in order to book their passage to the Champions League knock-out stages after a 2-2 draw against Benfica.
The visitors had gone ahead in the fourth minute at Old Trafford through a Phil Jones own goal, the England international inadvertently knocking Nicolas Gaitan's cross beyond David de Gea.
Nani's free-kick flew straight into the arms of goalkeeper Artur before Ashley Young drew a save out of the Benfica keeper after being teed up by Patrice Evra.
In the 30th minute they levelled, Dimitar Berbatov's head glancing Nani's cross and within seconds, Young was foiled by Artur when through on goal.
United stepped on the gas and duly went ahead for the first time when Darren Fletcher (59) finished at the second attempt from Evra's cross.
But the lead was short-lived as more defensive shenanigans involving De Gea and Rio Ferdinand culminated in Pablo Aimar slamming into the roof from two yards.
Berbatov had a goal chalked off and the Bulgarian volleyed over from eight yards out as United pressed whiel Rodrigo found the side netting with an effort from distance.
Sir Alex Ferguson felt his side were undone by two "freakish" moments.
He told Sky Sports 4: "It was very disappointing. A bit freakish to be honest with you - an own goal and then a bad kick out from David De Gea.
"The passback could have been a little bit better but David should just have played it into the stands.
"But we played so well tonight, made some good chances and played some good football.
"I've no fault with my players at all - we deserved better.
"It's a cruel game at times and it was cruel for us tonight."
